Rusty Smith said he was shocked to be named the Titans' starting quarterback. And while the rookie may not be the only one with that view, Titans coach Jeff Fisher said that's very much the case following the franchise-shaking events following a 19-16 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins Sunday.
The events involved quarterback Vince Young.
Young, who sustained a torn flexor tendon in his throwing thumb after throwing a pass late in the third quarter, reportedly got involved in a verbal altercation with Fisher afterward. He reportedly threw his pads and jersey into the stands upon leaving the field, then left the locker room upset after the altercation with Fisher.
Fisher said afterward Young is done as the Titans' starter injury or not, news that surprised Smith when told by reporters afterward.
"I haven't heard that at all," Smith said, adding, "OK. Well if that news is true, then I'm going to have to prepare and do my absolute best to lead this team. You know as a rookie in this league, there are a lot of things I need to get ready and prepare for."
Smith completed 3 of 9 passes for 62 yards and no touchdowns with an interception, but drove Tennessee for a go-ahead field goal in the fourth quarter.
"Rusty was fine," Titans running back Chris Johnson said after rushing for 130 yards on 21 carries. "He was just ready to get out there and make some plays. He probably was nervous but he didn't show it. ... I like what I seen out of Rusty; young guy, don't get that many first team reps or probably hardly no first team reps, so for him to step in there and call those plays and make some plays that he made, I'm proud of him for that. Whoever the quarterback is going to be or however it turns out, I'm pretty sure I'll believe in Rusty."
Johnson added that Young was not becoming a distraction, "Of course not. Vince is a great player; just a guy that wants to be out there on the field and making plays, so, no distraction at all."
